Cookies and your browser
Short, because there is not much to tell.
We do not track you
This website sets no cookies for analytics or advertising, and loads no advertising or analytics trackers. Because everything the site stores in your browser is there only to make the site work for you, we do not show a cookie banner. If that ever changes, we will ask first.
What the site stores in your browser
- Your details, if you gave them. When you register, the name, email and phone you typed are kept in your browser’s local storage so the next form is prefilled. They never leave your device this way.
- A sign-in session. If you sign in as a member or organizer, the session token is kept in local storage so you stay signed in. Signing out removes it.
- Where you were. The last gathering you opened, and where to take you back to after you sign in (for example the carpool board), so the next page lands in the right place.
- How you signed in last time (with an email code or with Oraqel Code), and, while you sign in with or connect Oraqel Code, a few short notes that carry the sign-in from one page to the next. They are cleared when it finishes.
- Your Oraqel Code birthday. If you type a birthday on your account page to see your code, it is kept in this browser only and is forgotten when you sign out.
- Preview switches and answered questions. A switch that turns on a feature we are trying out for you, and a note that you already answered a question on your account page, so we do not ask again.
- A short-lived copy of the gathering list, kept for the current browser tab only so menus open quickly.
- A conversation with the questions assistant, when it is offered, is kept for the current browser tab only and is gone when you close it.
You can clear all of this at any time from your browser’s settings (“clear site data”). The site keeps working; you will simply be asked to type your details again.
Bot protection
The forms that register you or take a gift are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks your browser for signs of automation. To do that it loads a script from Cloudflare (challenges.cloudflare.com) and may set or read data in your browser to tell people from bots. Cloudflare also sees your IP address and browser details. This is for security, not advertising. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
Videos
Devotional recordings and gathering videos are hosted on YouTube and load only when you press play, through YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Once a video plays, YouTube may set its own cookies under Google’s privacy policy. The small preview pictures for recorded devotionals are fetched from YouTube’s image server (i.ytimg.com) when that part of the page comes into view; that request carries no cookie from us.
Links to other sites
Checkout pages (Stripe), property listings (Airbnb), maps (Google Maps) and Zion Media’s YouTube channel are separate websites with their own cookie policies. We link to them; we do not embed their trackers here.
Fonts and scripts
The typefaces and the code this site uses are served from theziongathering.com itself, not from Google or a public CDN, so simply reading a page sends no request to anyone else. Beyond that, a page talks only to our own database (when you submit a form or it loads gathering details), to Cloudflare Turnstile on the forms described above, and, on the devotional page, to YouTube’s image server for the video previews described above.
